Social Media Impact

Empty Seat PSA                 On social media this week, I stumbled upon the video "Empty Seat PSA" on YouTube. The video goes through a series of different scenes showing an empty seat in a classroom, and empty easel in the art room, pom poms lying on the ground at a football game, a kid playing himself in chess, a missing letter at a pep rally, a one-man band, and then a mother bringing out a birthday cake to an empty seat. The video then goes on to show kids attending a funeral. The words " Don't let there be another empty seat" read across the screen. It shows all those empty seats being filled and then it reads "you can help, know the signs" it lists different signs of suicide and what to look for. "Take them seriously, listen, tell someone...it's better to lose a friendship, than a friend" and ends with listing the National Suicide Hotline's phone number.                At first watching th...

Flipped Learning

What is flipped learning?            According to The Flipped Learning Network the definition of Flipped Learning is "a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter".            This would mean that the child would be responsible for watching videos or using other multimedia tools to guide them through instruction at home, and that once they would come to class they would be held accountable for making sure they learned the material and be able to apply it in class using reinforcing activities. The reason why it is called flipped learning is because it takes the traditional learning model and completely flips it upside down.        ...

Adventure Awaits

As I sit here and reflect on the journey that is ahead I can't help but realize that the journey has already begun and this adventure I am on, it is just the beginning. I know that like anything else there are a lot of unknowns in my future. That will be the same with every passing year as new faces come into my classroom (gym), however with change comes growth. I'm going to sure try my very hardest to be the best teacher I can be right off the bat, however I know experience is one of the best learning tools. My goal will only be to continue to improve and be better for my students. To look back on last week's blog topic, how much times have changed. That is never going to stop. With time comes new and innovative ideas and with that comes reason to change and grow. I will make it a priority to stay in tune with all that is changing because how can i be the best for my students if I get stuck in 2017.        ...

Technology is changing education

It is interesting to reflect upon how much has changed from when I was in school which was in the 90's and 2000's and to think about how much technology has advanced. When I was growing up in school we had to go to the computer lab and if we were saving anything it had to be saved to a floppy disk. Not to mention, a research paper actually consisted of going to the library and checking out books because at the time using the internet was not the norm. The internet was just coming around when I was in 7th grade and that was when you had to make sure nobody in your house needed to use the phone because you had to use dial up internet. Oh, and if you wanted to get a hold of your friends you used AIM instant messenger which just this past weekend AIM signed off for the final time after 20 years which was kind of sad to me seeing as how that is actually how my husband and I first started talking was on AIM.          Like anything el...
